You must arrange for someone to drive you home when discharged from the hospital.  It is advisable to arrange for an adult to help you at home for the first 24 hours.

PRE-PROCEDURE TESTING

·         You will sign a consent form giving the radiologist permission to do the Vertebroplasty.

TEST DAY

Short Stay Unit

·         The day of your test, go directly to the Short Stay Unit (SSU), fourth floor, main hospital.  Use the north entrance (Five Mile Rd) of the hospital.

·         The nursing staff will obtain your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations and temperature) and perform a nursing assessment.  Please bring a list of medications that you are taking.

Radiology Department

In the X-ray room you will see a lot of equipment.  Radiology technologist will help the Interventional Radiologist.  The nurse will be monitoring your vital signs and heart rhythm during the entire procedure.  You will also receive some sedation during the procedure.  The following will occur:

·         You will be helped onto a special x-ray table.  You will be lying on your stomach during the procedure.

·         The procedure begins with the radiologist doing a preliminary planning for the procedure using X-ray guidance.

·         The skin over the area to be treated will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution, which feels cold.

·         The radiologist will inject a local anesthetic to numb the area where the needle will be inserted.  You will also receive some intravenous sedation during this procedure.

·         The needle is then inserted using x-rays to guide its direction and position.  Several x-rays and repositioning of the needle may be needed.

·         Once in the position, cement will be introduced into the spine to stabilize it.  You will have no stitches to remove.

The needle will then be removed.
